20/20 Vision Check-Up
By Shelly Radic
Like a giant E on the Snellen Vision Chart, every leader in a MOPS group should see the group’s vision with great clarity. The following vision tips can help MOPS leaders as they develop and implement their group’s vision. Vision should be considered with both short term and long term results in mind.
Vision check-ups test both near and distant vision
Make sure discussion of team vision includes both short term and long term impact. For instance, if a group has a vision for reaching Spanish speaking moms, short term results might include inviting moms from a local English as a Second Language class to the group. Long term results might include starting a Spanish language MOPS group. Understanding the long term impact often motivates team members to work towards the short term goal.
Vision should be viewed through corrective lenses
During a vision test, the optometrist utilizes many types of corrective lenses to ensure good vision. Similarly, a group’s vision should be viewed through the corrective lenses of God’s Word, Chartering Ministry policies and the MOPS International handbooks.
Vision needs input from more than one person
20/20 vision is what a “normal” person can see 20 feet away from an eye chart. A person with 20/10 vision sees the same thing at a greater distance, and someone with 20/30 vision needs to be closer. Various Steering Team members will look at a vision from different perspectives. Understanding these perspectives brings opportunity for needed vision adjustments.
Vision acuity needs to be strong in every member of the leadership team
Acuity means sharpness of perception. Every member of a MOPS leadership team- Steering, Discussion Group Leaders, Mentors, MOPPETS workers, Staff person overseeing the group- needs to clearly understand the group’s vision and how to incorporate that vision into their area of ministry.
Vision should be checked regularly
Vision can fade over time. Schedule periodic vision checks throughout the MOPS year to ensure the group is on track to accomplish all God has called you to do.
